With a decade of diverse educational experience from middle school to adult learners, I bring a student-centered, Socratic approach to writing, English, study skills, social sciences and test prep. I’ve always loved helping people discover new things about the world and themselves. And that, for me, is what learning’s all about — acing the next test or presentation is just a side effect (which I will absolutely help you achieve). You know the passion and confidence for learning is smoldering within you or your child. How can I help it burst into flame? History Established in 2017. I started Ignite Tutoring after five years as a high school history and English teacher. I wanted to have the freedom to keep bringing students the innovative, interdiciplinary and Socratic style of education I’d practiced as an envelope-pushing member of an independent school movement.I entered alternative independent education in 2011 in order to cut my teeth on a pedagogy that excites me, with the express intent to transition into urban public schools after investing in my own skill development. In my five years of intensive classroom and administrative experience in small, teacher-run schools, I have engaged diverse students in multi-modal, project-based exploration of global social studies and literature, and have seen my students blossom in their capacity for what I like to call “global citizenship, rooted in place.”Now, as I work on gaining my public school teacher’s license, I’m excited to bring you my passion and pedagogical expertise at Ignite.
I've been an educator of one kind or another since I was in high school myself. I've taught in classrooms, gardens, yurtsand theaters -- mostly English and social studies, but also bike mechanics, painting, acting and citizenship skills!I completed M.Ed. coursework from Antioch University with a concentration in Waldorf pedagogy; I graduated cum laude from Middlebury, one of the nation's top-ranked liberal arts colleges, in 2009 (GPA 3.56); and I have 800 SAT scores in reading and writing. As a student, though, I struggled with attention, time management, and executive functioning. I've learned to manage these challenges and find the strengths within my learning style, and I know first-hand the crucial role that tutors, coaches, and mentors can play. After 5 years in the classroom, I started Ignite and moved to Seattle to be with my partner--and to be closer to my cousin and her kids (they're responsible for the makeup in my "professional headshot"). I now live in Capitol Hill.
