I started Merit Academy (formerly Merit School) out of concern for my own children’s education. I knew that public and private schools alike were (and still are) plagued with the same problems: they tend to lack an overall vision, as well as the continuity and flexibility to better serve the accelerated needs of advanced students. So I made a list of all of the skills, knowledge, and activities I wanted my girls to have by the time they turned 18 years old, and with the help of outside experts, constructed a comprehensive K-12 curriculum that drew from the best private school curricula I could find.I eventually restructured the classes to a one-on-one format to provide the optimal learning environment. Merit teachers’ primary focus is to engage the student, and they do so by being passionate experts in their fields, not by following recycled lesson plans. Merit Academy graduates have been accepted to Stanford, Harvard, Yale, Brown, UCLA, UC Berkeley, and other prestigious colleges
