Higher Ground Learning is an organization of creative educators committed to the success and intellectual growth of students. We have fostered a creative and fun learning environment for students since 1996. Our diverse academic community requires seasoned, talented educators, and our staff comes armed with an arsenal of varied backgrounds and experiences as well as a deep understanding of different learning styles. As a result, we are uniquely able to provide students with specialized, individualized tutoring in all subject areas. Higher ground Learning also offers a robust test preparation program for the ACT and SAT. With programs throughout the Western US as well as in South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa, HGL’s prep materials have proven extremely successful, increasing students’ scores both locally and abroad. In addition to one-on-one tutoring in all subjects and test prep, we offer small group instruction, classes and workshops, and a variety of special programs. History Established in 1996. Higher Ground Learning first put down roots at the historic Oquirrh School. Initially conceived to help students balance academics with fine arts, Higher Ground soon became an environment where students who were struggling-or who simply wanted a supplement to their school courses- could develop a one-on-one relationship with a high-caliber tutor or mentor. With a core staff of four educators, Higher Ground served ten to twenty students a month. One and a half years later, Higher Ground Learning’s space could no longer accommodate its growing clientele. In response, Higher Ground moved to it’s second location- the Carpenter Building in Salt Lake City’s Gateway Design District. Now we have settled into our new space, located on the West end of historic Pierpont Avenue. Higher Ground Learning’s diverse teaching staff has expanded and we currently provide our trademark individualized tutoring, creative workshops, and test preparation services to over one hundred students each month.
Throughout my time at Higher Ground Learning, I've had the opportunity to witness some amazing things. I've seen students learn math concepts by eating sushi, building a skateboard ramp, and studying the nature of the bouncy ball. I've seen students who have never earned a grade higher than a D get A's and B's. I've seen the excited face of a student who just got his first college acceptance letter when, only 2 months earlier, it wasn't likely that he was going to graduate from high school. As a little kid, I practiced basketball everyday so that I could play in the NBA. I never did make it, but I have a pretty great job. Higher Ground is nothing without the people who work here, and I thank every person - past, present, and future - who has contributed a part of themselves to make Higher Ground the great place that it is today.
