The StudyPro is an Executive Function and Study Skills Center. We are the only learning center dedicated to improving the study skills and habits of students. Our Essential Study Skills course teaches critical skills — such as time management, organization, note-taking, and test prep — that are required, but not fully taught in schools. Our Homework Center is a place where students come to plan and complete work, and is supported by subject-matter experts across all subject areas. Our 1:1 coaching helps to support students on a weekly basis with organizing work, breaking down (“chunking”) longer-term assignments, assessing what may have gone wrong on tests, providing strategies for managing time and materials and creating a weekly work “plan”. We work with students on organizing and studying for all tests and have special workshops to support mid-terms and finals. We also hold a highly-attended (free) “Lunch and Learn” series for parents where local experts speak on topics such as fostering motivation and helping students push through frustration. If your son or daughter is smart, yet still struggles with some aspects of study or Executive Function skills, we have built this center for you. History Established in 2016. The StudyPro was founded in partnership by Kathy Essig, M.Ed. and Debbie Rosen. Based on Kathy’s extensive educational experience, and Debbie’s 30 years in business as well as her personal experience raising a son with ADHD, we wanted to build a new type of center to serve the unique needs of kids who need help with the “process” of school. Many kids “get” the content (aka math, English), but are challenged with starting, completing, organizing and/or staying on track. As a result, often there are struggles at home, putting strains on the relationships between parents and students. Tutors can be helpful, but when the challenge is “process”, students need to learn new skills, such as how to (really) use a planner, how to take proper notes from text or in class or how to build a study guide. This is where we help – we teach the core skills, provide a homework center to practice on real work and provide 1:1 coaching to personalize help and build independent, motivated learners.
Kathy Essig:As a Special Education Diagnostician and the creator of the Upper School Learning Center at the Potomac School in McLean, VA, Kathy has spent her career observing students with variable executive function skills. Kathy helps students to gain an understanding of their learning strengths and weaknesses, manage time and schedules, create visual and auditory note-taking strategies and effectively prepare for and take tests. The overarching goal is to develop a student who is self-aware, confident and has achieved 'learned independence'.Debbie Rosen:The StudyPro represents a "2nd calling" for Debbie who spent the last 30 years balancing her career in technology and raising her children. As a mother of a child with ADHD, she has worked tirelessly to navigate the challenges of raising a son who learns differently. After experiencing the struggles for students with "under-developed" executive functioning skills, her personal passion became a professional one.
